AM2 - Big Changes Coming Up

For the past 25 years the AM2 has been the standard for our industry to measure occupational competency -- love it or hate it, it has been at the centre of things for a long time.
Standards have changed over the years so there has been a review and consultation process over the last two years. This has been facilitated by NET, the examining body that administers the AM2, and has involved employers, practicing electricians, apprentices and AM2 examiners. Bob Gooch from DCET has been involved in this process to ensure that DCET are ready to tackle the new AM2 requirements.
The consultation exercise highlighted the need to make the AM2 assessment reflect current working practices, notably the use of modern connection and wiring systems.
The revised AM2, which will be with us from 26th April (slightly later than originally planned due to a delay in the delivery of the equipment), now encompasses methods of installation, termination, safe isolation, risk assessment, inspection, testing and fault finding. Having now received the new kit for the practical test, Bob and his team, screwdrivers in hand, are currently installing it.
Importantly, though, the new AM2 test will also require an hour long online test as well as the practical test - DCET are geared up for this, though the detail is still 'under wraps'.
Another change is that the new AM2 will provide guidance notes to employers and candidates in the form of a prerequisite checklist that will allow them to check their competence against the individual elements of the AM2. Any areas that are indicated as needing additional assistance can be discussed by the employer and candidate, or with DCET, to address any problems. Talking about this new aspect, Bob Gooch said, 'though this extra step will necessitate a little extra work, this check list will prevent candidates being entered for the AM2 before they are ready, preventing additional costs being incurred and time being lost'.
As we say above, DCET has been closely involved in the consultation process and Bob has reflected any feedback from our candidates and employers. This has been taken into consideration and is reflected in the way the new AM2 is administered and marked, as well as in the guidance that will be issued to candidates.
We'll keep you updated, but it is hoped that this gives a flavour of the changes that are coming in.
